Battlefield 6 August 18 Update Adds Top Gun, Wake Island, and More

Battlefield 6’s August 18 update is substantial enough to affect nearly every type of player. It brings the Top Gun crossover, two new fighter jets, the return of Wake Island, an expanded Tsuru Reef, Portal Custom Lobbies, and a limited free trial running from August 18 through August 25. Players interested in aerial combat should have the most to explore, while creators and competitive communities also gain new tools.

What changes in the August 18 update

The headline addition is the Top Gun event, which introduces Top Gun: Carrier Strike, a combined-arms mode inspired by Carrier Assault. Infantry, naval units, and pilots must coordinate to break through enemy defenses and destroy the opposing aircraft carrier. REDSEC receives Gauntlet: Fighter Sweep, a jets-only experience built around two-player aircraft crews, rival squadrons, and anti-aircraft threats.

Two new two-seat fighters join the vehicle roster: the F/A-81F Super Spectre and the F-74A Seacat. The update also adds the Interdictor sniper rifle, designed for long-range engagements and unlockable through the Battle Pass. Event Challenges award Ace Medals, which can be spent on limited-time Top Gun cosmetics. The CJTF Helix squad unit and character skins based on Rooster, Bob, and Warlock round out the crossover content.

Maps, Battle Royale, and player-facing improvements

Wake Island returns with infantry, vehicle, and aircraft combat across its coastal terrain. Tsuru Reef, already central to Season 4’s naval focus, is expanding with playable aircraft carriers. Those carriers appear as environmental features in Conquest and Escalation, but full carrier gameplay is reserved for Top Gun: Carrier Strike.

Fort Lyndon’s Battle Royale map gains the USS Grant, a crashed aircraft carrier that functions as a new high-value point of interest. It offers better loot than standard locations and will be marked as a High Value Zone during the first few weeks after the update arrives.

The patch also adds Airplane Control Assist, giving pilots an alternative control option that helps guide aircraft toward the camera’s centre while managing pitch, roll, and yaw. Vehicle landing gear, flight presentation, underwater transitions, countermeasures, Patrol Boat weapons, and jet audio receive additional work. Soldier animations, swimming, revives, weapons, gadgets, map collision, spawning, and numerous HUD elements have also been polished.

Who should play now, and what comes next

The update is especially relevant to players who enjoy combined-arms battles, naval warfare, or aircraft. The free trial offers access to six modes and four maps, including Tsuru Reef, Wake Island, Cairo Bazaar, and Hagental Base, making it a practical entry point for newcomers during the August 18-25 window.

Portal is another major beneficiary. Custom Lobbies arrive for Battle Royale Quads and Conquest, with team assignment, compatible map selection, and Spectating support. The feature is intended for organised and competitive communities, although the patch notes describe both Custom Lobbies and Spectating as works in progress. Portal also gains Tsuru Reef SDK support, Wake Island in Verified Experiences, new vehicles and assets, expanded Ring of Fire controls, and further creator properties.

Looking beyond this patch, Phase 3: Tidal Strike is scheduled to begin in September, with Proximity Chat planned for a phased rollout starting in REDSEC. Reworks for Sobek City and Blackwell Fields, along with the Server Browser, remain planned for Season 5.

What players should know

  • The update launches on August 18 and includes the Top Gun event, Wake Island, and expanded Tsuru Reef content.
  • Carrier Strike combines infantry, naval, and aviation objectives; Fighter Sweep is exclusive to REDSEC’s Gauntlet.
  • The F/A-81F Super Spectre and F-74A Seacat are two-seat fighter jets designed for pilots and wingmen.
  • The USS Grant adds a high-value crashed-carrier location to Fort Lyndon Battle Royale.
  • The August 18-25 free trial includes six modes and four maps.
  • Portal Custom Lobbies support Battle Royale Quads and Conquest but remain an early implementation.

Expert View

This is one of Battlefield 6’s most consequential seasonal updates because it expands the game in three directions at once: aerial combat, naval map design, and community-hosted play. The Top Gun material gives pilots a clear reason to return, while Wake Island and the Tsuru Reef expansion strengthen Season 4’s maritime identity. However, players primarily looking for a finished competitive infrastructure should temper expectations, since Custom Lobbies and Spectating still have stated limitations. The free trial makes the update easy to evaluate before committing more time.
