A Song of Ice and Fire: Tactics Expands Into the Dance of the Dragons

Tabletop games based on major fantasy franchises increasingly give players ways to explore stories beyond their most familiar battles. CMON is taking that approach with A Song of Ice & Fire: Tactics, whose latest official update shifts the focus from Robert’s Rebellion to the Targaryen succession crisis known as the Dance of the Dragons.

From Robert’s Rebellion to Westeros’ Targaryen Civil War

CMON has published a new Gamefound update centered on the Fire and Blood Skirmish Set. The set was previously introduced as the King’s Landing Skirmish Set, but its revised focus places players in the conflict between the Greens and Blacks as they fight over control of the Iron Throne.

The featured characters include Rhaenyra Targaryen, Daemon Targaryen, and Alicent Hightower. Their presence gives the set a direct connection to the period familiar to viewers of House of the Dragon, while expanding Tactics into another major era of Westerosi history.

The original Battle of the Trident Starter Set covers Robert’s Rebellion and includes figures such as Robert Baratheon, Eddard Stark, and Rhaegar Targaryen. Fire and Blood therefore does more than add another group of miniatures: it moves the game to a different generation, with new loyalties, objectives, and character relationships shaping its scenarios.

A Smaller Format Built Around Characters and Scenarios

A Song of Ice & Fire: Tactics was announced by CMON in late 2023 before reaching Gamefound in February 2024. It is designed as a more focused counterpart to the larger A Song of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game, using smaller warbands and scenario-based battles instead of enormous armies.

That format suits the Fire and Blood setting particularly well. Scenarios can take place in and beneath the Red Keep, allowing the game to emphasize individual confrontations and political struggles alongside military action. Players familiar with the Targaryen conflict should find the setting immediately recognizable, but the smaller scale also gives the system room to recreate specific moments rather than only broad campaigns.

Fire and Blood Is a Standalone Starting Point

Fire and Blood is not dependent on the Battle of the Trident Starter Set. The standalone package contains 24 plastic miniatures, unit cards, six double-sided game tiles, terrain, dice, tokens, objective and agenda cards, and a rulebook.

The contents support Black and Green warbands for the set’s scenarios. At the same time, the wider Tactics system allows warbands from other sets to be used across different battlefields. That gives players a choice between starting with Robert’s Rebellion or entering the setting through the Dance of the Dragons.

What the Update Signals for the Tactics Line

The latest showcase reinforces CMON’s original plan for Tactics as a complementary experience to its larger miniatures game. The line now reaches across Robert’s Rebellion, the Riverlands, and the Dance of the Dragons, with reinforcement packs adding further characters to players’ warbands.

With the project in mass production, the Fire and Blood update offers a clearer view of how CMON is building variety into the system. Rather than keeping every release within one historical period, Tactics can use Westeros’ different conflicts to provide distinct settings, characters, and scenario ideas.
