Cyberpunk 2077 players looking for a reason to revisit Night City should keep an eye on NightCoop. The fan-made project aims to turn CD Projekt Red’s single-player RPG into a shared-world co-op experience, but it is still in closed testing and does not yet have a release date.
What NightCoop plans to add
NightCoop is designed around players joining a host’s world rather than splitting into separate sessions. Its stated goal is to support as many as eight players in one game, with every participant able to fight the same enemies and see the same action during shootouts. The project also plans to cover the full campaign eventually, though current closed testing is limited to the prologue and Act 1. For now, that makes the mod one to follow rather than a finished way to play through the entire story with a group.
Who can play together and how choices work
Every player in a NightCoop session will control their own version of V. That means guests will not take over story characters such as Jackie Welles or Johnny Silverhand, but they can bring builds with different outfits, skills and combat approaches. Dialogue decisions are intended to be settled by player voting, which could make story scenes more collaborative while also slowing groups that cannot agree. The format is best suited to friends who want a shared campaign without abandoning the role-playing flexibility of creating an individual V.
What to expect from combat and release plans
The mod’s co-op combat is built around shared encounters instead of separate enemy instances. NightCoop also includes a switch for player-versus-player damage. Players defeated through PvP are downed rather than permanently removed from the session and can be revived. To prevent larger groups from trivializing fights, hosts can opt into enemy improvements such as grenade use, blocking and smarter AI instead of relying only on higher health pools. NightCoop is planned for PC, but the team has not announced when it will be publicly available.
What players should know
- NightCoop is currently in closed testing for the prologue and Act 1.
- The long-term target is co-op for the full Cyberpunk 2077 story with up to eight players.
- All participants play customized versions of V, not major companion or story characters.
- Dialogue choices are planned to use a vote system.
- PvP damage can be enabled or disabled, while enemy AI and combat tools can be strengthened for groups.
Expert View
NightCoop has an appealing design on paper because it addresses more than simple party play: shared combat, group decisions and optional challenge settings are all important for a campaign-sized co-op mod. Still, readers should temper expectations until testing expands and a release window is confirmed. A full-story, eight-player experience is an ambitious target, especially for a game built as a single-player RPG.
