Elden Ring Opens at Number One on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop

A four-year-old action RPG is making one of Nintendo Switch 2's most notable early impressions. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition has taken the top spot on the console's eShop rankings, suggesting that the long-delayed port is attracting significant interest despite arriving years after the original game.

A Difficult Port Reaches the Finish Line

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition faced serious doubts before launch. The Switch 2 version was initially expected in 2025, but early demonstrations drew criticism over unstable performance, especially during open-world exploration in handheld mode. FromSoftware ultimately pushed the release into 2026 to allow more time for improvements.

The finished product has made a considerably better impression. The port targets 30 frames per second in both handheld and docked play, and testing indicates that it usually stays near that goal. Drops can still occur during demanding open-world moments, but the severe performance problems feared after the earlier demonstrations have not defined the final release. Visual quality is also reported to remain sharp, often approaching 1080p.

Tarnished Edition Leads the eShop Charts

Nintendo Everything's rankings for the week of August 30 place Elden Ring at number one, ahead of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2, Mario Kart World, Cyberpunk 2077, and Pokemon Pokopia. The game also occupied the top position through preloads the week before, then held it after launching on August 28.

The ranking measures revenue rather than copies sold, which is important context because Tarnished Edition costs $79.99 and therefore has an advantage over less expensive releases. Even so, maintaining first place after launch is the clearest early indication that many Switch 2 owners are choosing to purchase the port.

A New Audience for the Lands Between

Elden Ring originally launched in 2022, so much of its established audience has already spent years exploring the Lands Between elsewhere. The Switch 2 edition still offers a strong package for newcomers and returning players by combining the base game with Shadow of the Erdtree, as well as new classes, equipment, and Torrent customization. These additions are also available through the Elden Ring Tarnished Pack.

Nintendo's hardware adds another reason to revisit the game. Players can move between television and portable play on a dedicated console version, a flexibility that the original release did not provide. That combination of content and convenience may be helping the port reach players who skipped Elden Ring on other systems.

What Comes Next for FromSoftware

Exact sales figures will be needed to determine whether the launch momentum lasts, particularly because eShop revenue rankings do not reveal unit totals. Still, the early result represents a substantial reversal from the port's troubled public debut. Instead of becoming an example of ambitious hardware limits, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is currently one of Switch 2's leading digital releases.

The performance could also strengthen confidence in FromSoftware's Nintendo plans. The studio is developing The Duskbloods specifically for Switch 2, giving the Tarnished Edition's reception added importance beyond Elden Ring itself.

Key points

  • Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition ranks first on the Switch 2 eShop for the week of August 30.
  • The port launched on August 28 after being delayed from 2025 to 2026 for performance improvements.
  • It targets 30 FPS in handheld and docked modes, with occasional drops in demanding areas.
  • Revenue rankings show strong early demand, but they do not confirm unit sales.

Expert View

The launch points to a meaningful opportunity for major third-party games on Nintendo's newer hardware. Elden Ring is old enough to be familiar, yet its portable format and complete content package give it a fresh selling point. If its chart position translates into sustained sales, FromSoftware may have stronger evidence that Switch 2 can support ambitious releases and that its audience is willing to return to established games when the platform experience is compelling.
