Patch 7.55 is live in Final Fantasy XIV, and it’s aimed squarely at level 100 players: a new Occult Crescent zone (North Horn), fresh Phantom Jobs and phantom weapon upgrades, plus new quests for the Hildibrand series and allied societies. If you’re deciding whether to jump in now, this guide breaks down what’s new, who it’s for, and what to watch for before you queue.
What’s new in Patch 7.55: Occult Crescent: North Horn and core systems
Final Fantasy XIV Patch 7.55 is the third installment in the 7.5 update series and is now available. The update requires downloading roughly 1.3 GB of data and adds major content inside the Occult Crescent.
The headline addition is Occult Crescent: North Horn, an instanced field area that expands exploration beyond the South Horn. Players will use Phantom Jobs here—supplemental jobs that grant access to Phantom Actions and can be progressed independently via Phantom EXP earned through encounters on the island. Patch 7.55 also raises the knowledge level cap for the Occult Crescent from 20 to 40.
North Horn also brings a new public dungeon: Forked Tower: Magic. It includes both Normal and Extreme difficulty options, with the Normal version designed to be easier than the South Horn’s Forked Tower: Blood thanks to player feedback.
Entry and progression are tied to the Occult Crescent’s knowledge system: defeating enemies with higher knowledge than your own reduces your damage dealt while increasing damage received, but it yields more knowledge. Knowledge is earned through quests and combat, is shown via the Occult Crescent HUD, and affects access to the Forked Towers.
Who should play: level 100 requirements, Phantom Jobs, and side content
Patch 7.55 is built around level 100 play. The Occult Crescent: North Horn quests require Disciple of War or Magic at level 100, with additional quest prerequisites such as completing earlier North Horn or phantom-related story steps. Players can enter the Occult Crescent by speaking with Jeffroy in the Phantom Village, and Aethernet teleportation becomes available after attuning to all Tuliyollal shards and completing the quest “Unfamiliar Territory.”
Phantom Jobs are a major focus. Patch 7.55 adds new Phantom Jobs, including Phantom Dragoon and Phantom Necromancer tied to North Horn exploration, and also includes Phantom Black Mage and Phantom Blue Mage as additional additions. Phantom Blue Mage learns actions by witnessing enemies use abilities before defeating them.
Weapon progression is also expanded: new Phantom weapon quests are available, including the quest “Under No Illusion,” which allows players to enhance phantom weapons through multiple stages. At the second stage, players select the secondary stats their weapon can be imbued with, with options depending on the Job.
Outside the Occult Crescent, Patch 7.55 advances the Hildibrand questline into its next chapter, and it adds a capstone quest for players who have reached maximum reputation with multiple allied societies in Tural.
PvP, system updates, and what’s next after 7.55
Patch 7.55 includes balance adjustments across PVP actions. Paladin’s Phalanx limit break charge time is increased, Dark Knight receives changes affecting Impalement recast timing and Blackest Night barrier potency, and multiple other jobs see targeted tuning—such as Dragoon limit break duration adjustments, Ninja offensive potency increases, Machinist Scattergun and Aether Mortar changes, Pictomancer Star Prism damage increase reverting to a lower value, and White Mage Aquaveil barrier potency increased.
Crystalline Conflict and Frontline also receive updates. Crystalline Conflict’s seasonal rotation moves from Season Twenty to Season Twenty-one, with specific voucher reward rules and tier/ranking behavior described for players finishing in Bronze or higher.
On the system side, Square Enix is adding multiple field instances for Heritage Found and Phantom Village to prevent server congestion immediately after Patch 7.55 goes live, monitoring and removing the feature once congestion subsides. Auxesia’s multi-instance division added earlier is also planned to be removed.
Looking ahead, Patch 7.56 is scheduled to launch on Tuesday, September 8, bringing more main story content bridging toward Evercold and introducing the Beastmaster Limited Job. An update to the Manderville Gold Saucer tied to Final Fantasy VII Remake collaboration is set for Wednesday, October 28.
What players should know before jumping into 7.55
- Occult Crescent: North Horn is designed for level 100 Disciple of War/Magic players, and access is tied to the Occult Crescent knowledge system (now capped up to 40).
- Forked Tower: Magic has Normal and Extreme difficulties; Extreme is tied to knowledge level and uses a tougher entry/resurrection framework than the Normal version.
- Phantom Jobs aren’t just cosmetic: they unlock Phantom Actions and Phantom Mastery effects that persist even if you switch phantom jobs later.
- Phantom weapon upgrades in 7.55 include a final selection step for secondary stats at the second enhancement stage.
- If you’re primarily a PvP player, Patch 7.55 adjusts multiple jobs’ defensive/offensive tools and also updates seasonal rules in Crystalline Conflict.
Expert View
Patch 7.55 is the kind of update that rewards commitment: the Occult Crescent’s knowledge/chain mechanics and Phantom Job progression create a clear loop for level 100 players who want repeatable goals beyond raid checklists. The addition of Normal difficulty to Forked Tower: Magic should broaden access, while Extreme remains a real challenge for groups targeting efficiency. If you’re not interested in Phantom Systems or field exploration, the update still offers meaningful PvP tuning and Hildibrand quest progress—but the core “must-do” content is squarely North Horn.
