Square Enix is continuing to build Final Fantasy Resonance around the series’ long history, using familiar heroes as battle-ready summons rather than simple cameos. Firion, the lead character of Final Fantasy 2 and the franchise’s first named protagonist, will join the game’s roster of Visions when Resonance launches on October 22.
A new role for Final Fantasy 2’s protagonist
Firion’s addition gives Final Fantasy Resonance a representative from one of the earliest numbered entries in the series. Final Fantasy 2 originally launched in Japan for the Famicom in December 1988, introducing a separate story after the first game reached its conclusion. The game follows Firion and his allies as they support the Wild Rose Rebellion against the Palamecian Empire. Western players did not receive an official version until Final Fantasy Origins arrived on PlayStation in 2003.
Firion has appeared in other Final Fantasy spin-offs before, most notably as a weapons specialist in the Dissidia games. That interpretation will continue in Resonance, where he switches between several weapon types and uses them to deliver multi-hit attacks.
How Firion works as a Vision
Final Fantasy Resonance is an HD-2D remake of the opening story arc from the discontinued mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Its Visions system allows the main cast to call on incarnations of past Final Fantasy characters during battles. Firion will join a lineup that includes the Warrior of Light, Onion Knight, Cecil Harvey, Terra Branford, Cloud Strife, Squall Leonhart, Zidane Tribal, Tidus, Lightning, Noctis Lucis Caelum, Clive Rosfield, and others.
Firion’s ultimate attack uses his bow to fire a spread of arrows across a broad area. He is also assigned the Breaker role, placing him alongside characters such as Cloud. His thunder, wind, and holy elemental affinities should make him especially useful against enemies vulnerable to those damage types. As of the available information, 26 Visions have been confirmed, including 16 heroes from numbered mainline Final Fantasy games.
What to expect before launch
Final Fantasy Resonance was first revealed during the June 9 Nintendo Direct. Square Enix later confirmed that the game will release on current-generation platforms on Thursday, October 22. The distinct attacks attached to each Vision appear to be one of the game’s central ways of connecting its modern combat system to the wider Final Fantasy catalog.
Firion’s inclusion also reinforces the project’s broader purpose: reshaping material from a discontinued live-service title into a new standalone presentation. With Final Fantasy 14: Evercold and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation also identified as upcoming projects, the franchise is continuing to expand across multiple eras and formats through 2026 and 2027.

Expert View
Firion’s return is more than a nostalgia pick. His weapon-focused design gives Resonance another clearly defined Vision while extending the playable identity of a character whose original game has historically been less visible than later Final Fantasy entries. The approach could help the remake appeal both to longtime fans and to players discovering these older protagonists through a modern battle system.
