Multiplayer betas are often the first real test of whether a major shooter can satisfy both its competitive and cooperative communities. The Coalition has expanded that test for Gears of War: E-Day, adding PvP Versus to the first early-access weekend after fans criticized the original Horde-only plan.
Versus Joins the First Beta Weekend
Players who pre-ordered Gears of War: E-Day or have Xbox Game Pass Ultimate can now access both Horde Siege and Versus from August 6 through August 10. The second beta weekend, running from August 13 through August 17, remains open to all players.
The late addition follows complaints that the early-access period did not include competitive multiplayer. Those concerns grew after previews had shown content creators playing Versus, while the early beta promotion had focused on Horde Siege. The Coalition responded by making the Versus client available for preloading on Xbox and PC, although it has not yet announced the full map or mode lineup for the test.
A Smaller, Reworked Competitive Format
According to The Coalition, E-Day’s Versus mode is built around 4v4 matches rather than the series’ traditional 5v5 format. Players will begin with equal loadouts, compete over Power Weapons, and use the new movement systems introduced in this entry.
The full game is expected to include Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition, and Crucible, a mode centered on Power Cores. The beta should therefore give players an early look at how the smaller team size and revised movement affect Gears’ emphasis on positioning, timing, and coordinated firefights.
Horde Siege Remains a Major Part of the Test
Versus is sharing the opening weekend with Horde Siege, a 12-player cooperative mode that divides players into three squads across larger environments. The beta’s Golden Quarter map will support four classes, with teams completing changing objectives before facing a final battle and extraction.
PC participants can also test Nvidia DLSS and Reflex settings during the beta. Together, the two multiplayer pillars should provide useful feedback on balance, movement, matchmaking, and network performance ahead of the game’s October 6 launch.

Expert View
The Versus announcement signals that The Coalition is treating community feedback as an important part of the beta process rather than waiting for a later test. More importantly, opening both multiplayer pillars during early access gives the studio a broader competitive picture before launch. For the franchise, the response also helps rebuild enthusiasm around Marcus Fenix’s return by ensuring early players can evaluate the cooperative and player-versus-player experiences, not just one side of the package.
