The Project’s Future Depends on More Than Technology
The biggest uncertainty is not the project’s visual ambition but whether it remains available. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have historically taken a strict approach to unauthorized projects, so there is no guarantee that Gen1Recomp or the mod will avoid legal action. One factor that may help the base project is that it does not supply the original game data. Instead, users must provide their own ROM for Pokémon Red, Blue, or Yellow. Players who own physical cartridges can use hardware such as the GB Operator to back up a game to a PC, preserving both access to the original software and save files that might otherwise be threatened by aging cartridge batteries.
