As more console exclusives reach PC through official releases, emulation, and community projects, older games are becoming a major focus for preservation-minded players. God of War 3 Remastered, long confined to PlayStation hardware, is now playable on Windows through an unofficial alpha port built by developer Felipe Prado.
Kratos' Greek finale reaches Windows
God of War 3 first launched for PS3 in 2010, then returned as a PS4 remaster five years later. Unlike 2018's God of War and God of War Ragnarok, which later received official PC versions, the conclusion to Kratos' war against Olympus had remained unavailable on the platform. Prado's project changes that situation by allowing the PS4 version of God of War 3 Remastered to run natively on PC from the opening sequence through the final encounter.
The project adds PC-focused options
The current alpha reportedly supports saves, audio, cinematics, controllers, keyboard input, and remappable controls. It also includes save backups, shader caching, optional FSR 1 support, cheats, performance settings, mod compatibility, and an engine patch intended to unlock frame rates up to 240 FPS. Prado reported an average near 144 FPS at 1080p on an RX 6700 XT, although that figure should be treated as a developer test rather than a universal benchmark. The build still has known texture issues above 1080p and players should expect alpha-stage instability.
This is not a conventional emulator setup
The port uses a different approach from running the game through full PS3 or PS4 emulation. Since the PS4 and modern PCs share x86-64 CPU architecture, the game's executable can run directly on a PC processor while a custom Windows runtime replaces PlayStation system functions. On the graphics side, a heavily altered shadPS4 video component converts PS4 graphics commands for Vulkan. The result is closer in principle to a compatibility layer than a complete virtual console environment.
Players still need the original game files
The project does not include or distribute God of War 3 Remastered itself. Users must provide their own PS4 game files, making this a tool for owners rather than a standalone release. Its arrival is notable as Sony has confirmed that the original God of War trilogy is receiving remake treatment, though that effort remains early in development without a release date. Sony has also announced God of War Laufey for PS5 on February 16, 2027, with no PC edition confirmed.
Key points
- The unofficial port is playable from beginning to end, according to its developer.
- It supports keyboard controls, controllers, save functions, mods, and high-frame-rate options.
- The alpha build has reported texture problems at resolutions above 1080p.
- Players must use their own God of War 3 Remastered PS4 game files.

Expert View
This project highlights the widening gap between publisher-led PC strategy and the preservation work of dedicated communities. For players, native execution, flexible controls, mods, and higher frame rates can give an older console release a second life. For Sony, the renewed interest in God of War's Greek era shows there is continued demand beyond the Norse storyline, particularly while an official trilogy remake is still far from launch.
