A CGC Pristine 10 Gold Star Rayquaza from the 2005 EX Deoxys expansion sold for $1,020,000 at Fanatics Collect’s August Premier Auction, making it the most expensive English Pokémon card ever sold. For players deciding whether to chase older cards, the sale highlights how rarity, condition, and set-specific print quality can outweigh the popularity of more familiar cards.
What changed in the Pokémon card market?
The auctioned card is a Gold Star Rayquaza, one of the rarest and most desirable cards from the Pokémon TCG’s EX era. Its $1.02 million result exceeded the previous English-language record by more than $65,000. That earlier mark belonged to a PSA 10 first-edition Charizard from the Base Set, a card pulled by Logan Paul and Ken Goldin in 2021 before selling for $954,800 in early 2026.
The new sale is notable not only because of the Pokémon featured, but also because of the card’s grade. CGC awarded this copy its Pristine 10 designation, and the company has confirmed that it is the only Gold Star Rayquaza copy to receive that label. Twelve other submitted copies received Gem Mint 10 grades, but none matched the auctioned card’s top designation.
Why collectors are paying attention
Gold Star cards were introduced with the EX Team Rocket Returns expansion and were exceptionally difficult to pull, appearing roughly once in every two booster boxes. Rayquaza’s status as a major Legendary Pokémon added further demand, while the EX Deoxys release created an additional condition challenge.
CGC has noted that cards from EX Deoxys were particularly vulnerable to production damage. Edge wear could appear before cards were packed into booster boxes, making pristine examples much harder to find. That combination of low pull rates, a popular subject, and unusually strict condition requirements explains why this copy commanded such a premium over already valuable alternatives.
The result also gives collectors a useful distinction: a card does not need to be the most recognizable Pokémon card to set a record. In this case, the decisive factor was the survival of an exceptionally clean example from a difficult-to-grade era.
What comes next for Pokémon TCG collectors
The record arrives as the Pokémon TCG continues building interest around both vintage cards and new releases. The 30th Celebration expansion is scheduled for September 2026, with a new rarity and reprints of iconic cards. The final main set announced for 2026, Delta Reign, is planned for November 6 and will spotlight Mega Rayquaza ex.
Those releases may attract new collectors, but they are unlikely to make the Gold Star Rayquaza immediately easier to obtain. Anyone considering older cards should treat the $1.02 million sale as a record for an exceptional, uniquely graded copy rather than a standard price guide for every Rayquaza or Gold Star card. Logan Paul’s PSA 10 Illustrator Pikachu, which sold for more than $16 million, remains the record for a Pokémon card in any language and the most expensive trading card ever sold.
