Open-world games increasingly use wildlife to make their environments feel alive, but Rockstar Games has already established an unusually detailed standard with Red Dead Redemption 2. Grand Theft Auto 6 will carry that work into Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida, with more than 170 animal species spread across its land, air, and water environments.
Leonida’s Ecosystem Draws From Florida
Rockstar confirmed the scale of GTA 6’s wildlife in a recent Game Informer interview. The lineup includes animals closely associated with Florida, such as flamingos, manatees, pelicans, and alligators. It also reflects the state’s invasive species, including green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, and rhesus macaque monkeys.
That combination should give different parts of Leonida their own environmental character. Wildlife will not be limited to a single type of setting: players can expect animals to inhabit areas across the state’s cities, beaches, swamps, and other natural spaces. The range also gives exploration more visual variety beyond roads, buildings, and crowded urban areas.
Rockstar Is Expanding Its Red Dead Wildlife Technology
GTA 6’s animal systems build on technology developed during the Red Dead Redemption series, particularly the detailed behavior and variety seen in Red Dead Redemption 2. However, Leonida presents a very different challenge from the environments featured in Rockstar’s western games.
The studio is supporting visual traits such as iridescence, bioluminescence, and translucency. Different feather types are also part of the system, while updated hair and fur technology is being used to create more detailed coats and pelts. These improvements are intended to make the animals look better suited to the wide range of habitats found throughout Leonida.
Rare and Legendary Animals Could Shape Exploration
Not every creature will simply appear as background activity. Rockstar has divided some of GTA 6’s wildlife into Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary categories, although the specific animals in those groups have not been revealed.
That structure could encourage players to explore more deliberately and search beyond the most obvious routes. Finding every hidden creature may become an optional objective for completion-focused players, while ordinary encounters should still make travel through Leonida feel less predictable. Rockstar is keeping the rarest examples secret for now, leaving room for further reveals as the game’s world is shown in more detail.

Expert View
This reveal suggests that Rockstar views wildlife as a core part of GTA 6’s open-world design rather than simple scenery. A broader ecosystem could make Leonida feel more distinct from previous Grand Theft Auto settings and give exploration a stronger sense of discovery. The Rare and Legendary categories may also create a long-term community hunt, even though Rockstar has not yet explained how those animals will be found or what role they will play.
