Arrowhead Game Studios is bringing a harsher kind of Terminid encounter to Helldivers 2 with underground cave networks and two venomous, spider-like enemy variants. The additions raise the pressure on squads by combining confined spaces, low visibility and a poison system that can steadily dismantle an unprepared team.
What happened: caves and Noxious Terminids are joining the war
Helldivers 2 will expand its planetary battlefields with Terminid cave systems that can appear beneath the surface across a wider range of Galactic Map biomes. These underground areas are built around tight routes, restricted sightlines and close-quarters combat, changing the rhythm of missions that normally allow players more room to reposition or call in support.
The caves will also introduce Noxious Scavengers and Noxious Spewers. The Scavengers are small, quick attackers capable of repeatedly inflicting venom with their bites. Noxious Spewers are a more threatening spider-like variant that moves quickly and can use Web Spit to hinder players, poison through bites, and unleash a damaging Web Explosion. Arrowhead has positioned the new enemies as part of its 2026 content plans.
Why it matters: venom creates a new survival problem
Terminid encounters have long featured bile-based threats, but venom adds a separate status effect for squads to manage. Players will receive a poison indicator on the HUD, allowing them to track how severe the infection has become. A light poisoning level causes hazy vision and gradual health loss, while heavier poisoning accelerates the health drain and prevents sprinting.
That loss of mobility is especially dangerous below ground. In narrow tunnels, a player who cannot sprint has fewer options to create distance from fast enemies or escape a web-based attack. Stims remove the poison effect, making resource management more important during cave operations. The update also gives players another reason to consider fire-focused equipment when preparing for Terminid missions.
What to watch next: Arrowhead still has a December update planned
The Noxious Terminids and cave biome content were previously listed under Arrowhead's October 2026 roadmap window, but they are not the final planned release of the year. The studio has also teased a larger update for December, although it has not provided details on its theme, systems or additional enemies.
In the meantime, the new free gameplay content arrives alongside Helldivers 2's continuing Warbond releases. The most recent premium pack, Scope of Authority, launched in October and includes scoped weapons, caltrops and the SS-33 Mimetic Marshal armor. The cave update does not require players to rely on that Warbond, but its arrival reinforces Arrowhead's approach of pairing paid gear collections with ongoing additions to the live battlefield.
What players should prepare for
- Bring enough stims for cave dives, as they clear venom effects.
- Expect reduced visibility and limited movement space in underground tunnels.
- Prioritize fast-moving Noxious Scavengers before repeated bites build up poison.
- Treat Noxious Spewers as urgent threats because their attacks can slow, poison and heavily damage players.
- Consider fire-oriented weapons when selecting a loadout for the new Terminid encounters.
Poison status effects in Helldivers 2
| Condition | Effects | How to clear it |
|---|---|---|
| Lightly Poisoned | Hazy vision and slow health loss over time | Use a stim |
| Heavily Poisoned | Faster health loss, hazy vision and no ability to sprint | Use a stim |
Expert View
This is a meaningful combat expansion rather than a cosmetic map refresh. Helldivers 2 is at its best when missions force squads to rethink habits, and caves filled with fast venomous Terminids should do exactly that: make spacing, target priority and stim discipline matter far more than they do in open terrain.
