Kernel Hearts Brings Day-One Co-Op Action RPG Combat to Xbox Game Pass

Xbox Game Pass subscribers looking for a new multiplayer RPG can start Kernel Hearts today. The day-one release combines fast action, roguelite runs, anime-inspired magical-girl heroes, and optional online co-op. It is the seventh new title added to the service in September 2026 and the 141st Xbox Game Pass release of the year.

What changed for Xbox Game Pass subscribers

Kernel Hearts officially launched for PC and consoles on September 17 at 1 p.m. ET, joining Microsoft's subscription catalog at the same time. The game is currently available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, placing it in the same day-one access pattern used by many new releases on the service.

The title comes from Argentina-based Ephemera Games and is published by Pennsylvania-based Whitethorn Games. Whitethorn has previously supported Xbox Game Pass with games including Spray Paint Simulator, Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, Magical Delicacy, Botany Manor, and Lake.

Who should play Kernel Hearts

Kernel Hearts follows a four-member M.A.H.O.U. Unit made up of magical girls attempting to climb the Tower of Babel, defeat angelic enemies, and save humanity. Its combat focuses on testing combinations of attacks, spells, and movement abilities rather than relying on a single fixed approach.

Players can tackle the game alone or join online co-op sessions. Between runs, the hub provides space to spend resources on upgrades and equipment, meet NPCs, and develop relationships. That structure makes Kernel Hearts a fit for players who want repeatable combat runs with progression and social systems outside the action.

What comes next in the September lineup

Kernel Hearts is not the final new Xbox Game Pass arrival scheduled for the month. Four additional releases are listed for September: Well Dweller, Dune: Awakening, Mad King Redemption, and Minecraft Dungeons 2.

The service has also expanded access to Ninja Gaiden 4, which is now available through the Xbox Game Pass Premium tier. The game originally launched as a day-one addition in September 2025 for PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Microsoft has scheduled Gears of War: E-Day for Xbox Game Pass on October 6. Because that date falls on the first Tuesday of the month, it is also the likely timing for the formal announcement of the October 2026 Wave 1 lineup.

Expert View

Kernel Hearts gives Xbox Game Pass users a focused reason to try a new co-op action RPG without requiring a separate purchase. Its solo option and progression systems broaden its appeal, while the day-one availability makes it easy for subscribers to sample. Players who prefer a more traditional single-player RPG may find the roguelite structure less compelling, but the combination of repeatable runs and online multiplayer makes this a meaningful September addition.
