Magic: The Gathering Maps Its 2027 In-Universe Roadmap

As the tabletop space keeps leaning into long-term content plans, Wizards of the Coast used MagicCon Amsterdam to lay out where Magic: The Gathering is headed next. The 2027 schedule blends in-universe adventures with Universes Beyond releases, while also expanding the MagicCon calendar for more event-driven product drops.

2027: In-universe sets return with a rotating Universes Beyond rhythm

Wizards confirmed that 2027 will again split Magic’s release pipeline between in-universe sets and Universes Beyond (UB) crossovers. The pattern is set up as three in-universe sets and three UB sets, swapping back and forth across the year so there are no consecutive UB releases.

The in-universe half of the lineup is where Wizards leaned hardest into spectacle and worldbuilding, starting with a brand-new underwater location and continuing through multiple planes before closing out with a familiar name that’s been altered by recent lore events. Wizards also teased that more details on the UB crossovers may arrive later at MagicCon Atlanta, leaving the exact crossover slate unconfirmed for now.

The 2027 in-universe set lineup: underwater, kaiju-scale, and time-bending

First up is Nauctis: The Sunken Realm on February 5, 2027. Set in a newly introduced realm, it’s Magic’s take on an underwater plane where merfolk and other aquatic creatures are positioned as the centerpiece. Wizards’ reveals also previewed diver suits and other ideas designed to shake up how the submerged world is represented at the card level.

Next comes Kamigawa: Titanbreach on June 4, 2027. An Omenpath opens over Kamigawa, and Ikoria’s presence crashes into the plane, forcing a chaotic clash between Ikoria’s monsters and Kamigawa’s residents. The premise is a natural fit for both giant robots and kaiju-style threats, and Wizards framed the set as a summer release.

The year’s final in-universe set is Zhalfir on October 1, 2027. The plane returns as its own location, but with changes tied to everything that happened after it phased out. Wizards also confirmed that influences associated with New Phyrexia and Mirrodin will show up, and that Teferi Akosa—described as time-bending—will return. The result is positioned as a lore-forward, mind-bending afrofantasy-inspired entry.

More MagicCons and more Commander-focused product

Wizards also announced an expanded MagicCon footprint for 2027, confirming four events: Detroit (February 26–28), Tokyo (May 14–16), Las Vegas (August 27–29), and Amsterdam (December 3–5). With more stops on the calendar, the publisher is effectively widening the window for in-person reveals and Mystery Booster-related activity.

Alongside the event schedule, Wizards highlighted a new Mystery Booster set focused on Commander. The company says it will mix familiar cards with new additions, including new mechanics. Wizards also previewed that this Commander-oriented Mystery Booster can be obtained through event channels or via the Festival In A Box online line—tying the product directly to the expanded convention strategy.

Reality Fracture closes out the year’s in-universe run

While the panel’s headline was 2027, Wizards also spent time on Reality Fracture, which will serve as Magic’s last in-universe set for the year. The theme centers on twists to well-known cards and characters, driven by Jace’s multiverse meddling. Wizards pointed to variations such as Titanbones and Enlightened Confidant as examples of how familiar identities will be reinterpreted.

Reality Fracture will also receive Secret Lair attention through a Secret Lair Bundle. Wizards described the bundle format as including two Collector Boosters, six Play Boosters, a set of basic lands, and two promo cards from the Secret Lair Bundle lineup (with reimagined art styles). Wizards suggested demand could be high for these reimagined cards, referencing the kind of popularity that certain Final Fantasy-themed cards have generated in the past.

Finally, Wizards noted there are still three unannounced Universes Beyond crossovers, implying more information will likely surface at later MagicCon programming.
