Mario Kart World Ver. 1.8.0 Adds 10 Courses and New Rallies

Mario Kart World is receiving its free Ver. 1.8.0 update later today, giving Nintendo’s Switch 2 racer its biggest course-focused content drop so far. The update adds 10 courses inspired by the original Super Mario Kart, introduces two Knockout Tour routes, and expands the game’s online and LAN room features.

What happened in Mario Kart World’s Ver. 1.8.0 update

The headline addition is a group of classic SNES-inspired courses available in VS Race, Time Trials, Online Play, and Wireless Play. The selection includes SNES Mario Circuit 1, 2, and 3; SNES Ghost Valley 1, 2, and 3; SNES Choco Island 1 and 2; SNES Vanilla Lake 1; and SNES Koopa Beach 1. These recreations use item panels on the track instead of standard item boxes, while the race leading to Mario Circuit retains item boxes.

Knockout Tour also receives two new rallies: Propeller Rally and Turnip Rally. Both follow the mode’s format of four consecutive tracks, with players attempting to remain ahead of the pack. The new rallies become selectable after players have completed one of the existing Knockout Tour rallies.

Why it matters for racers and online groups

This is Mario Kart World’s 12th free post-launch update, extending Nintendo’s ongoing support for a game that launched alongside the Switch 2 in June of last year. The game earned a generally positive critical response, including an 87 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic, and the new content gives both competitive and casual players more reasons to revisit its race rotation.

The multiplayer changes are particularly useful for larger communities. Online and LAN rooms can now hold up to 26 players, although only 24 can participate in a race at once. Players can switch to Spectator Mode from the pause menu, allowing full rooms to accommodate viewers without requiring them to leave. Spectators can also change to the player’s perspective and view live participant rankings.

The patch adjusts item behavior and handling as well. Green Shells, fireballs, ice balls, and Boomerangs bounce off walls fewer times, while recovery after being crushed by a Thwomp is faster. Item probabilities in races and Knockout Tour have also been revised.

What to watch next

Time Trials players should note two interface changes: lap times are now displayed individually, and the color used for the player-versus-ghost time difference has been changed. The update also adds a Photo Mode filter and expands visibility into items rivals may be carrying, including the Coin, Kamek, Blooper, Feather, Fire Flower, Ice Flower, Boomerang, Hammer, and ? Block.

Nintendo has also addressed a wide range of issues. Fixes cover abnormal jumps at the end of rails, players becoming trapped after crashes, map-related control failures in Free Roam, incorrect Spiny Shell behavior, faulty respawns, shortcut ranking errors, and several course-specific collision problems. Ghost data affected by the rail-jump issue may be removed from View Rankings.

Expert View

Ver. 1.8.0 is more than a nostalgia package. The 10-course addition strengthens Mario Kart World’s long-term race variety, while Spectator Mode and larger rooms are meaningful upgrades for organized groups and community events. Nintendo is not presenting a new competitive ruleset here, but it is making the game easier to watch, easier to host, and less vulnerable to several frustrating exploits. That combination should give the update a lasting impact beyond its retro appeal.
