Marvel’s Wolverine Reportedly Cut Nightcrawler and Several Early Ideas

Large game projects often change dramatically before release, especially when developers are adapting a major comic-book property. Marvel’s Wolverine appears to be one such case: leaked development material reportedly points to an earlier version that included Nightcrawler, a new weapon for Logan, and a fundamentally different approach to controlling his claws.

The Insomniac leak revealed an earlier direction

Insomniac Games suffered a major data breach in December 2023, exposing information tied to several PlayStation projects. Material connected to Marvel’s Wolverine reportedly included an early build and part of the game’s planned cast. Those details suggest that the version nearing release has been reshaped in meaningful ways rather than simply polished from the leaked build.

Nightcrawler was reportedly replaced in Madripoor

One of the most notable changes involves Kurt Wagner, better known as Nightcrawler. The mutant was reportedly intended to appear as one of Logan’s allies during the Madripoor portion of the adventure. According to the leaked information, Marvel objected to using such a prominent X-Men character in a limited supporting role confined to one area. Insomniac then apparently considered Jubilee as a replacement, but that plan was also abandoned. Current leak-based reports instead identify Tyger Tiger as a central figure in Madripoor.

Several gameplay concepts were also abandoned

The early design reportedly gave Logan access to a miniature crossbow with multiple projectile types. Crafting and upgrades for the weapon were said to be managed through the game’s hub areas. Marvel allegedly rejected the idea because it did not feel appropriate for Wolverine, leading Insomniac to remove it.

A more substantial experiment involved the claws themselves. The studio reportedly spent around two years testing separate left- and right-claw attacks through the DualSense triggers. A half-press would have produced a quick jab, while a full press would have triggered a slower sweeping strike. Although the system was said to work reasonably well in testing, concerns involving accessibility, responsiveness, and development scope ultimately led to its cancellation. Adaptive trigger effects are still expected to feature in the finished game, but they will not define the core attack system.

The final game may be more focused than early builds

Leaks also indicated that Marvel’s Wolverine once explored larger environments and semi-open-zone structures. Insomniac now describes the project as a mostly linear, globe-trotting single-player adventure, suggesting a more streamlined format. Not every discarded idea has stayed gone, however. A proto-Sentinel boss encounter reportedly disappeared from development in late 2022, while footage from the current version suggests that the battle may have returned.

The extent of these changes should become clearer when Marvel’s Wolverine launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 15. Until then, the leaked material remains an imperfect guide to the final release rather than a complete picture of the game.

Key points

  • Nightcrawler was reportedly planned as a Madripoor ally before being removed.
  • Jubilee was allegedly considered as a replacement, with Tyger Tiger now central to that section.
  • A miniature crossbow and its upgrade system were reportedly cut.
  • DualSense-based individual claw controls were tested for about two years before being abandoned.

Expert View

The reported changes highlight the balancing act involved in building a flagship superhero game. Character prominence, weapon identity, accessibility, and production scope can all reshape a project long after its initial pitch. For the Wolverine franchise, the cuts may indicate a deliberate effort to keep Logan’s combat focused and recognizable while narrowing the game’s structure. The final test will be whether that tighter direction delivers variety without losing the larger ambitions suggested by the early builds.
