Nintendo Switch 2 is continuing to expand its library with major games from the previous generation, and two notable Lord of the Rings adaptations are next. Aspyr has confirmed the Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle for September 30, 2026, bringing Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War to Nintendo hardware for the first time.
Two celebrated Middle-earth games arrive together
The collection includes Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition and Shadow of War Definitive Edition. Both games will also be sold separately. Shadow of Mordor costs $19.99, while Shadow of War is priced at $49.99. The complete bundle costs $69.99, with all three purchase options currently listed at a 50% pre-order discount. That reduces the bundle to $34.99 before launch.
The September 30 date also has some historical significance: it falls exactly 12 years after Shadow of Mordor originally launched in 2014. Shadow of War followed in 2017, continuing the story of Ranger Talion and the spirit of Celebrimbor as they battle Sauron's forces between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The Nemesis System is the main attraction
The Switch 2 versions give Nintendo players access to the feature that defined Monolith Productions' Shadow series. The Nemesis System allows Orc enemies to remember encounters with Talion and develop according to their victories, defeats, strengths, fears, and interactions with the player.
Shadow of War expands that idea beyond individual rivalries. Players can dominate certain enemies, recruit them as followers, and use their personalities and histories while building armies and attacking fortresses. The system creates emergent stories that change from one playthrough to another, making the two games especially distinct among action titles set in Middle-earth.
Complete editions come with important limitations
Both Switch 2 releases include substantial post-launch content. Shadow of Mordor's Game of the Year Edition contains Lord of the Hunt, The Bright Lord, additional Warband Missions, bonus Runes, skins, and other Season Pass material. Shadow of War's Definitive Edition includes the Desolation of Mordor and Blade of Galadriel expansions, the Slaughter Tribe and Outlaw Tribe Nemesis expansions, and the Sword of Dominion bonus weapon.
Some online features have been removed or adjusted. The Garrison has been redesigned to work offline, allowing undeployed Orc followers to move between regions. Online Conquests, Vendettas, Fight Pits, Chests, and Training Orders will not be available on Switch 2. The announcement came after both games appeared in the eShop's coming-soon section, prompting speculation before Aspyr formally confirmed the release.

Expert View
The release gives Nintendo players a long-awaited entry point into one of modern Middle-earth gaming's strongest systems, while offering a useful test of demand for older premium games on Switch 2. It also arrives after Monolith Productions' closure in 2025, making the collection a prominent reminder of the studio's influence. The offline Garrison adjustment preserves part of Shadow of War's follower management, but the missing online modes mean this is not a feature-for-feature continuation of the original experience.
