Minecraft Switch 2 Upgrade Is Free for Some Players

Minecraft arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on Tuesday, October 27, and some existing players can move to the new version without paying again. The offer is limited to digital editions purchased on the original Switch, runs only through the end of January 2027, and has separate pricing in Japan and Taiwan. Players deciding whether to upgrade should check their copy and account region before the deadline.

What changes with the Switch 2 version

Nintendo and Mojang will make the Switch 2 version of Minecraft: Standard Edition available on October 27. Digital pre-orders are already open through the Nintendo eShop, with the new release starting at $29.99 for players who are not eligible for the upgrade offer. The game will include the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, while the Vibrant Visuals setting will provide more detailed lighting and shadows. That visual option has limitations: it cannot be used in split-screen mode or with certain Marketplace Worlds. Data from the original Switch edition will transfer to Switch 2.

Who can claim the free upgrade

The no-cost upgrade applies to digital editions of Minecraft released on the original Nintendo Switch. It is not currently confirmed whether owners of a physical copy will receive the same upgrade path, so cartridge holders should wait for clarification from Nintendo or Mojang rather than assume they qualify. The offer also has regional exceptions. Customers in Japan must pay 100 yen, while customers in Taiwan must pay 30 NTD. For eligible players elsewhere, the free upgrade ends after January 2027, giving them a limited window after launch. Qualifying owners can also pre-order the Deluxe and Ultimate Collections at a discount.

What to expect after launch

The Switch 2 release is arriving alongside more planned Minecraft content, although not all of it has a confirmed date. Mojang has announced an upcoming content Drop featuring an underground Ice Cave biome and frozen zombies. These enemies can throw snowballs, adding a ranged threat to underground exploration. Mojang has not yet provided a release date for that Drop. A new dimension called the Sift is also planned for 2027. It can already be explored in Minecraft Dungeons 2, offering players an early look at the concept before it reaches Minecraft's Java and Bedrock Editions.

Expert View

For digital owners on the original Switch, this is a useful upgrade window, but it is easy to miss because the offer is temporary and region-dependent. The lack of information for physical-copy owners is the main unresolved issue. Players who qualify can wait until launch if they prefer, but should complete the upgrade before January 2027 and avoid assuming that every visual feature works in split-screen or Marketplace Worlds.
