Mortal Shell 2’s First Major Update Adds New Items and Reworks Bosses

Mortal Shell 2 has received its first major post-launch update, and it is available now. The free patch is worth installing for anyone playing the third-person soulslike: alongside the expected bug fixes and performance work, it changes progression, expands exploration, adjusts weapons and Shells, and reworks 16 bosses and minibosses.

What changed in Mortal Shell 2’s first major update?

The August 29 update introduces three notable items. Fragile Tarstones break after losing durability and produce Tarcores, Glimpse Stones deteriorate as enemies are defeated before turning into Glimpses, and Egon’s Stone can revive the player at a dungeon entrance. When it breaks, Egon’s Stone also prevents Gloom loss from that death. Justicar’s Stone and Gloombound Stone are now fragile, with stronger passive effects and additional effects when they break. The economy has also been opened up: Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite, meaning players can upgrade every Shell and Tarstone in one playthrough. Tarstones provide more Tarcores, while Merrick can sell Tarstones and Mether’s Severance and restock those items as the player progresses.

Who benefits most from the new exploration and balance changes?

Players returning to earlier areas will find new Beacons in Fainweald and Mammon, as well as additional world items, revised reward chests, and two cosmetic rewards tied to quest completion. A teleporter now appears in one dungeon after the Grisha pit fight, removing the return journey. Combat has received similarly broad attention. Heavy weapons were rebalanced, the Obsidian Hammer and Great Martyr’s Blade deal more damage, and the Axatana’s ability now grants invulnerability frames while applying Fragile stacks. Enemy aggression and disengagement ranges have been retuned, environmental hazards have been revised, and several Shell-specific problems affecting Eredrim, Proxima, Genessa, Smert, and Gragu have been corrected. Boss updates cover attack timing, hitboxes, arena navigation, effects, damage, and behavior, although the supplied notes do not identify every affected boss by name.

Should you install the update now or wait?

For active players, installing the patch now is the clear choice. The update addresses softlocks, save-protection problems, broken interactables, unreliable spawns, enemy tracking, projectile hit detection, and riposte behavior. Ripostes now have more consistent invulnerability windows, faster recoveries in many cases, and damage that scales more appropriately into late-game, New Game Plus, and Night Mode content. Performance work includes shader-compilation hitch reductions, dungeon-lighting optimizations, fewer costly enemy spawns in crowded areas, and reduced background processing on consoles. The patch also improves Steam Deck detection and controller support, adds support for Switch Pro and Switch Pro 2 controllers, and introduces options such as Geometry Budgets and revised frame generation. One known issue remains: using Grisha Remnant Summon during a boss fight may cause a Malborn Offspring bug.

What players should know

  • The update is free and arrived nine days after Mortal Shell 2 launched.
  • Glimpses and Tarcores are now renewable, making long-term upgrades less restrictive.
  • Egon’s Stone offers a dungeon-focused safety net by preserving Gloom after its protective effect is used.
  • Bosses, minibosses, heavy weapons, Shell abilities, enemy behavior, and ripostes all received gameplay changes.
  • Existing saves with previously upgraded Tarstones receive compensatory Tarcores.
  • A broad technical pass targets crashes, softlocks, save loss, performance hitches, and controller issues.

Expert View

This is a substantial first update rather than a narrow stability patch. The renewable upgrade resources and dungeon recovery item should make progression more flexible, while the combat and boss revisions address areas that directly affect moment-to-moment play. Players should still check the remaining known issue before relying on the Grisha Remnant Summon in boss fights, but there is little reason for current players to delay downloading the update.
