Live-service support is becoming increasingly important for games built around long-term creativity, and Pokemon Pokopia is expanding its sandbox with a substantial free update. The version 2.0 patch is available now, adding underwater exploration and construction alongside new customization options, convenience features, performance improvements, and a large collection of bug fixes.
A major free update arrives alongside paid DLC
Pokemon Pokopia launched earlier this year to strong reviews and quickly became one of the most highly regarded Switch 2 exclusives, as well as the highest-rated game in the Pokemon franchise according to the source material. Game Freak, Omega Force, and Nintendo have continued supporting the life simulation game through updates and limited-time events.
Version 2.0 is free for every player. It arrives at the same time as Bubbly Basin, the first paid expansion. The Expansion Pass costs $34.99 and includes Bubbly Basin, a second expansion planned for late 2026, and a third expansion scheduled for 2027. Bubbly Basin is already available to Expansion Pass owners, but its central Dive feature is not locked behind the purchase.
Dive opens an underwater building frontier
The headline addition in version 2.0 is Dive, which lets Ditto and players move freely underwater. To unlock it, players must learn Jump and Surf, raise Bleak Beach's environment level to 5, and then speak with Manaphy.
Dive expands more than exploration. Players can construct habitats and other structures below the surface, making underwater settlements and even complete cities possible. The ability is a major part of the Bubbly Basin expansion, but its availability in the free update gives the entire player base a new way to use existing building systems.
Patch 2.0 improves building, movement, and daily play
The update also adds the portal pod and safe, a dynamic Ditto print pattern, the Lie Down and Ready, Set, Go! emotes, and five new hair colors. Players can transfer items between their bag and storage box in bulk, remove objects placed inside containers such as garbage bins, and adjust the depth of windows, doors, and similar decorations more precisely.
Several systems have been made more flexible. Companions can follow players while using Surf, Glide, Rollout, or Magnet Rise, while Rollout can now break certain large natural objects. Surf can be activated on land through a new input combination, Strength works underwater, and an All tab has been added to both the Pokédex and Habitat Dex. The patch also adds camera settings designed to reduce motion sickness.
Construction receives several practical upgrades, including a higher power-generator placement limit, more town photos, underwater house building through the Build specialty, and the ability to place items on square plants. Additional fixes address multiplayer construction, Dream Island loading and travel, habitat behavior, painting, requests, movement, and several Pokémon-specific problems.

Expert View
Version 2.0 shows how Pokemon Pokopia can support paid expansions without leaving the broader community behind. Making Dive free ensures every player can benefit from the update's most meaningful systems change, while Bubbly Basin gives Expansion Pass owners additional content built around that same mechanic. Future expansions are expected to add Pokemon dress-up features and a new village, although their exact release windows remain unannounced. If later DLC follows this structure, free updates could help maintain engagement while premium content funds a longer support cycle.
