PS Plus Premium Adds Two Trials on October 20

PlayStation Plus Premium members will have two more games to sample from October 20. Sony has confirmed trials for Mortal Shell 2 and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, arriving on the same day as the next batch of PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog titles. For subscribers deciding whether Premium is worth following this month, the key detail is that these are limited-access trials, not games added permanently to their libraries.

What changes for PS Plus Premium members

The October 20 update adds game trials for Mortal Shell 2 and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. Trials are reserved for the PlayStation Plus Premium tier and let subscribers try a game before deciding whether to buy it. Sony has not provided an end date for either trial. That is in line with the service's usual handling of trials, which are often listed as available until further notice rather than given a fixed removal date. Players should not treat either offer as a permanent claimable game, since the new bonuses are not full PS Plus catalog additions.

Which games are worth trying first

Mortal Shell 2 is the standalone follow-up to Cold Symmetry's 2020 soulslike. Its action is built around inhabiting fallen fighters known as Shells, each contributing different abilities to a player's build. The sequel also shifts toward a compact connected world, with more than 60 dungeons, expanded weapon progression, and combat no longer governed by a stamina meter. It launched seven days before Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and carries a $49.99 price tag. A comparable free demo-like open beta has already been available on Steam and Xbox Series X/S.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launched on August 27 for PC and consoles at $59.99. Asobo Studio's prequel takes place about 15 years before A Plague Tale: Requiem and places more focus on direct fighting, parries, and environmental attacks. Exploration and puzzles remain important, but stealth is less central because the rat swarms associated with earlier entries are absent. Unlike Mortal Shell 2, it did not previously have a trial on another platform.

What arrives next in the October lineup

October 20 is also the date for the second October wave of PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog games. Mafia: The Old Country, Horizon Forbidden West, and Mycopunk are scheduled to join the service. Of those additions, Horizon Forbidden West is available on PS4, while Mafia: The Old Country and Mycopunk are PS5-only releases. Sony has also outlined another catalog update for October 27, featuring Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2, Monster Energy Supercross 25 – The Official Video Game, and Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn Edition. These catalog games are separate from the two Premium trials.

What players should know

  • Mortal Shell 2 and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy trials launch on October 20.
  • The trials require a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
  • Sony has not announced when either trial will be removed.
  • The offers are trials, so they are not permanent games members can claim to their libraries.
  • The same day brings Mafia: The Old Country, Horizon Forbidden West, and Mycopunk to the Extra and Premium catalog.

Expert View

This is a useful Premium perk rather than a major service overhaul. Resonance is the more notable addition for players who want a first look at Asobo's new action-focused direction, while Mortal Shell 2 gives soulslike fans another way to assess its combat and build options. With no stated expiry date, there is no confirmed urgency, but subscribers interested in either game can use the trials to make a more informed purchase decision.
