The Sega Master System arrived during the golden age of vertical arcade shooters, but its software library is no longer limited to releases from the 1980s and 1990s. More than four decades after the console launched, solo developer Bad Computer has released Razing Core, an original sci-fi shoot 'em up built specifically for Sega's classic hardware.
A New Homebrew Game for a Classic Shooter Platform
Razing Core draws from the arcade shooter tradition associated with games such as Astro Warrior and Power Strike, two titles linked to the Master System's history. Its presentation and action also evoke later arcade shooters, including Raiden from 1990 and DonPachi from 1995, although Razing Core is a new game rather than a conversion or re-release.
Bad Computer created the project with a custom engine, making it a genuine homebrew release for the Sega Master System. Development began in May 2025, following the developer's earlier work on classic-console projects such as Frontier Force. That game took inspiration from fixed shooters like Space Invaders while using colorful Master System-style visuals.
Seven Stages, Boss Battles, and Infinite Continues
The new shooter is structured around seven stages, each with its own design and multiple boss encounters. Players can also destroy certain background objects during battles, adding visual effects and another layer of interaction to the arcade-style action.
A retro soundtrack is central to the experience, with catchy music intended to reinforce the game's classic arcade identity. Razing Core also includes infinite continues, a feature that lowers the barrier to reaching later stages and gives players more opportunity to learn boss patterns, explore the levels, and replay the campaign.
Digital Version Available Now, Cartridge Planned for 2027
Bad Computer released the Razing Core Sega Master System ROM on itch.io on September 8 for $7.99. The digital release can be played on compatible hardware or through a Sega Master System or Mark 3 emulator. The game supports Mega Drive, Genesis, Master System, and Mark 3 controllers.
A free demo is also available, although it is limited to the first stage. Like the full version, it requires suitable hardware or an emulator. Players who prefer a physical cartridge will need to wait: Bad Computer says a physical edition is planned for 2027, with further details expected in a future announcement.

Expert View
Razing Core highlights the durability of the retro homebrew scene. Developers can still create software for discontinued consoles, while digital distribution gives niche projects a straightforward way to reach interested players. The planned cartridge edition could appeal to collectors, though its future availability and stock have not been detailed. For now, the demo and digital ROM offer the clearest way for Master System fans to see how far new independent software can push familiar hardware.
