As physical game preservation becomes more important to players, access to older console libraries is increasingly tied to community-built technology. The open-source RPCS3 emulator has reached a significant milestone by allowing supported PlayStation 3 game discs to be read directly on a PC, giving owners another way to access games already in their collections.
A New Route for Playing PS3 Games on PC
The latest RPCS3 update adds support for compatible Blu-ray Disc drives, allowing the emulator to read PS3 game discs instead of relying only on other ways of obtaining game data. The project demonstrated the feature with Drakengard 3, also known as Drag-On Dragoon 3, confirming that a physical PS3 release could be recognized and played through the emulator.
The breakthrough was primarily credited to two RPCS3 contributors, Megamouse and digant73. Disc-drive support is available alongside the emulator’s continued Windows 11 compatibility and also extends to FreeBSD, macOS, and Linux. However, the feature depends on having suitable hardware rather than simply installing the emulator on any PC.
Hardware Requirements and Library Coverage
RPCS3 recommends a six-core CPU and a graphics processor compatible with Vulkan 1.2 or newer for running PS3 games in a playable state. Blu-ray drives from manufacturers including LG and Asus were tested with the update, although the source does not establish that every model from those brands will work.
The emulator’s overall PS3 support has also continued to grow. RPCS3 reported compatibility with 75% of the PS3 game library in July 2026. More than 2,300 games were released physically and digitally on the platform, meaning at least 1,700 titles could potentially be playable through RPCS3 based on that compatibility figure. This does not mean every supported game will perform identically, and individual results will depend on the user’s PC and the title being run.
Why the Timing Matters for PlayStation Owners
The disc-reading milestone arrives as Sony moves toward shutting down the PS3 version of the PlayStation Store in stages. Sony announced in July 2026 that the full shutdown would be completed by July 2027, with the exact timing depending on each country’s storefront. Once a local store closes, players will no longer be able to make new digital purchases of PS3 games there.
Previously purchased games can still be downloaded and installed after the shutdown, but it remains unclear how long that access will continue. That uncertainty makes the ability to use physical collections through a community emulator particularly relevant for players who want to preserve access to older releases. RPCS3 does not yet offer complete PS3 library compatibility, but direct disc support broadens the ways owners can revisit games they already possess.
