Sonic’s 35th Anniversary Gets a $6,500 Porcelain Statue

Sonic the Hedgehog’s 35th anniversary is receiving an official collectible rather than a new game: YOYOYO has announced an Arita ware porcelain statue priced at ¥1,000,000, or approximately $6,500. Named Infinite Blue, the piece is limited to 50 units worldwide, turning one of Sega’s most recognizable characters into an extremely exclusive luxury collectible.

What happened

YOYOYO’s Infinite Blue statue depicts Sonic in a running pose and uses gosu, a traditional blue pigment, to recreate his familiar color. The design was handled by 224porcelain, a company that combines the long-standing tradition of Hizen Yoshida ware with 3D digital technology.

The statue measures 8.4 inches high, 6.1 inches wide, and 9 inches deep. According to the announcement, development took eight months, helping explain the ¥1,000,000 price. While that figure places the item well beyond the reach of most fans, the limited production run makes clear that this is intended as a premium art object rather than a conventional piece of merchandise.

Why it matters

Sonic has remained central to Sega’s identity for 35 years, appearing in platformers, racing games, fighting games, and other genres. The franchise has produced both fan favorites and less successful releases, but its continued visibility demonstrates the enduring value of Sega’s mascot.

Infinite Blue also highlights how the anniversary is being marked outside the games themselves. The source material notes that Sega has not delivered a new Sonic game for the milestone, but the company and its partners have continued with other tributes, including a life-size Sonic created with synthetic DNA earlier in the year. For collectors, the porcelain statue offers a distinctly Japanese craft interpretation of the character rather than another mass-market figure.

What to watch next

Five statues will be available on October 9 at Sonic the Exhibition: Across Generations in Ikebukuro Parco, Tokyo. Those units will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The remaining 45 pieces will be offered through an online lottery, with applications open from October 9 through October 18.

Applications are limited to one per person, so fans outside Tokyo will need to rely on the lottery route. The release is therefore difficult to access for two separate reasons: its $6,500 equivalent price and its worldwide limit of just 50 units. The anniversary may still bring further tributes, as the year is not yet over, but Infinite Blue is already one of the most elaborate Sonic collectibles announced for the celebration.

Expert View

Infinite Blue is unlikely to broaden Sonic’s anniversary reach, but that is not really its purpose. At $6,500 and 50 units, it targets high-end collectors and presents Sonic as a character with enough cultural weight to enter the world of traditional craft. The more important question is whether Sega follows this premium merchandise push with a substantial game announcement, since collectibles can celebrate the franchise but cannot replace fresh gameplay for the wider fanbase.
