Steel Aces Enters Early Access Before Steam Release

Players looking for a new free-to-play tank MMO can already try Steel Aces through its official launcher. The small-scale project is entering early access with 30-player PvP battles, a large roster of historically inspired vehicles, and a Steam launch planned once Valve completes its review.

How to play Steel Aces right now

Steel Aces became available on October 30 via the game’s official website, where players can download the dedicated launcher. The game is free to play and is expected to retain that model when it eventually reaches version 1.0. Armative Studios is also preparing a Steam release, but that version was still waiting for Valve’s final approval. The developer expected it to arrive before November 15, giving PC players a second way to access the game if that timetable holds.

Who Steel Aces is built for

The game targets players who enjoy vehicle-focused MMO combat, particularly tank battles with a historical angle. Its early-access build includes more than 150 tank models inspired by machines used from the interwar years through modern conflicts. Vehicles represent several nations, with the United States faction alone containing 50 models across light, heavy, main battle tank, and fire-support categories. Armative Studios, a three-person German team, worked with war museums while developing the vehicle roster in pursuit of greater authenticity.

What to expect from matches and future updates

Steel Aces currently centers on 30-player PvP combat and deliberately excludes artillery and aircraft. That decision keeps engagements on the ground and places more emphasis on direct sightlines and tank positioning. A cooperative PvE mode is also planned, allowing teams to fight computer-controlled opponents. Matchmaking separates vehicles into two broad periods: tanks from 1916 to 1950 for lower ranks, and machines from 1950 to the present for higher ranks. Players will need to earn points and experience to unlock more advanced vehicles. The studio ultimately aims to build a roster of more than 1,800 distinct tanks.

What players should know

  • Steel Aces can be downloaded free through its official launcher.
  • The Steam edition was awaiting approval and was expected before November 15.
  • PvP supports 30 players, while a co-op PvE mode is planned for a later stage.
  • Battles are divided by vehicle era to avoid matchups between older tanks and much newer ammunition.
  • Current monetization includes collector vehicles, progression subscriptions, paint schemes, and decals; the developer says it does not plan unfair advantages.

Expert View

Steel Aces has a clear pitch for tank-MMO players: era-separated matchmaking, ground-only combat, and a substantial early vehicle roster. Its free entry point makes it easy to sample, but the Steam launch and planned PvE mode remain important milestones. The project’s long-term challenge will be proving that a three-person studio can sustain content, balance, and player population against established games in the genre.
