Tarae: The Unbound Blends Diablo-Style Combat With Eastern Fantasy

The action RPG market continues to stretch beyond Diablo, with developers experimenting with new settings, combat systems, and class structures around the familiar loop of defeating enemies and collecting better gear. Tarae: The Unbound is taking that established isometric formula into an Eastern fantasy world, while one of its six playable Seekers bears a striking resemblance to Ghost of Tsushima protagonist Jin Sakai.

A Familiar Action RPG Foundation With Its Own Identity

Tarae: The Unbound is still deep in development, but its Steam listing already outlines an ambitious action RPG. Published by Krafton and developed by Boundary, the game follows adventurers working to restore the Six Realms. Players will fight through large groups of enemies with a broad selection of skills, chaining attacks and building characters around different combat approaches.

The structure will be recognizable to Diablo fans: an overhead perspective, spellcasting, hordes of enemies, equipment progression, and classes built around distinct resources and abilities. Tarae is not simply reproducing Sanctuary, however. Its world of Taegwido draws on Eastern architecture, mythology, and visual traditions, taking players through locations that include temples and war-damaged city streets.

Six Seekers Bring Story and Build Variety

The playable characters, known as Seekers, are central to both the narrative and the combat design. Each has a different background and personal story, with their journeys gradually unfolding as the group travels through Taegwido. In solo play, the other Seekers are expected to join the adventure over time, giving players a chance to experience the wider cast even when they are not playing cooperatively. Those stories are also designed to appear in online co-op.

Their differences extend beyond appearance and lore. Tarae promises distinct builds for every class, using concepts such as the Five Elements, Yin and Yang, karma, and reincarnation to shape progression. Players will choose traits that establish a build’s direction before unlocking branches of related skill trees. The available approaches include blades and firearms, mystical and martial arts, and spirit-focused abilities. Gear will provide another layer of specialization.

A Seeker That Echoes Ghost of Tsushima

One of the Seekers is likely to attract the most attention from Ghost of Tsushima fans. The character uses a sword and wears a half-mask that strongly recalls Jin Sakai’s menpo, while the outfit and color scheme create a similar silhouette. The resemblance appears deliberate enough to suggest how a top-down action RPG inspired by Ghost of Tsushima: Legends might look, although Tarae remains its own game with a separate setting and cast.

That Seeker is one part of a broader lineup that also includes an older warrior, a hooded woman carrying a bell, a fan-wielding fighter, a shirtless martial artist, and a masked woman. The range of designs gives players reasons to choose a character based on both playstyle and personality.

Taegwido Could Set the Game Apart

Tarae’s enemies are also built around its setting rather than Diablo’s traditional heaven-and-hell imagery. Promotional material has shown creatures including dragons, flying lions, and reptilian beasts, combining elements of Asian mythology with demonic fantasy. Boss encounters are intended to differ from one another, requiring players to study attack patterns and respond with well-timed dodges or counters.

With its combination of familiar loot-driven combat, six narrative-focused classes, and a distinctive Eastern fantasy world, Tarae: The Unbound has a clear route to standing out among upcoming ARPGs. Its next major test will be showing how these systems work together once development advances further.

Expert View

Tarae: The Unbound signals how crowded ARPG conventions can be refreshed through setting and character design. Diablo-inspired combat gives players an immediate point of reference, while Taegwido and the Jin Sakai-like Seeker provide a stronger visual hook than another generic dark-fantasy world. For the game to convert that interest into a lasting community, its class depth, cooperative story structure, and boss variety will need to feel substantial when more of the project is revealed.
