The Witcher 3 Remastered Hotfix Targets HairWorks Performance Problems

A remastered release can refresh a celebrated game while also exposing new technical complications. That balance is now visible in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, which launched on September 29 as a free upgrade for existing owners. CD Projekt Red has acknowledged performance trouble linked to Nvidia HairWorks and has begun addressing it through a PC hotfix, while continuing to investigate reports from console players.

A Visual Upgrade With More Than Improved Graphics

The Witcher 3 Remastered is not limited to sharper visuals or revised environmental effects. CD Projekt Red also reworked the skill tree, requiring players to unlock certain traits along a path before gaining access to later abilities. Geralt still has a limit on equipped skills, but players can exchange those abilities as needed and modify them through mutations.

Those additions arrive alongside updated lighting and other graphical features intended to modernize the game. The release nevertheless launched with several issues affecting performance and presentation, making the first post-launch updates especially important for players returning to the RPG.

HairWorks Became an Immediate Performance Concern

CD Projekt Red identified Nvidia HairWorks as one source of reduced performance on PC. The technology gives Geralt’s hair more detailed movement and appearance, particularly in windy conditions, but it requires an Nvidia graphics card. The studio initially recommended disabling the feature as a temporary workaround while a broader fix was prepared.

Hotfix 5.00c subsequently became available through GOG, Steam, and other PC storefronts. Its changes include a reversal of the adjustment that caused major visual and performance problems for some users with HairWorks enabled. The update also makes visual changes to Bloom, vegetation lighting, saturation, and Path Tracing lighting in Velen.

Patch 5.00c Covers More Than Graphics

The hotfix addresses several unrelated problems as well. Players should no longer be blocked from saving or loading when their Documents folder path contains special characters, and voiceover volume should not drop sharply after using pause-menu tabs. The update also corrects marketing telemetry settings, restores achievement-list behavior on GOG, and fixes an issue preventing the Classic 1.32 version from launching.

Console owners have also reported performance concerns, particularly on PS5. CD Projekt Red said earlier console adjustments were included in Patch 5.00b, but the studio continues to examine additional reported issues. That leaves the game’s post-launch technical work ongoing across more than one platform.

Expert View

The situation highlights the risk of tying a major visual refresh to a technically ambitious feature set, even when the underlying game is well established. The Witcher 3 Remastered still opened with a 94/100 Metacritic score from 10 critic reviews, the highest score on the platform so far in 2026, but sustained goodwill will depend on how quickly remaining performance complaints are resolved. For CD Projekt Red, the rapid hotfix response is useful, yet continued communication and stable updates will matter more as players assess whether the remaster delivers a dependable upgrade across platforms.
