Retro-styled first-person shooters continue to give established franchises new ways to reach modern audiences, and Warhammer 40,000 is leaning further into that approach. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 will launch on October 14 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, bringing a larger campaign, a second playable character, and a demo that is already available.
A Direct Follow-Up to Boltgun
Boltgun 2 follows the 2023 release of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, a single-player shooter built around fast action and a deliberately retro visual style inspired by classic boomer shooters. The first game starred Space Marine Malum Caedo and was set several years after the events of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. It was well received by players on Steam, where it holds an 87.43% positive review average according to the source material.
The sequel continues Caedo's story while expanding the campaign with a second playable hero: Adepta Sororitas Battle Sister Veyrath. Although players can switch between two distinct characters, Boltgun 2 remains a single-player experience rather than a multiplayer title.
More Levels, Enemies, and Choice
The follow-up is planned to include more than 30 levels and over 40 new enemy types. Those foes will represent the forces associated with Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne, and Slaanesh, giving the campaign a broader range of Chaos threats than its predecessor.
Boss encounters are also being redesigned with greater complexity and difficulty. The campaign will branch, allowing players more freedom in how they progress. That structure comes with a completion-focused tradeoff: finishing everything will require returning to certain levels rather than following a single linear route.
Two Heroes, Two Combat Styles
Malum Caedo returns with his Boltgun, Chainsword, frag grenades, and signature Obliterating Charge. Battle Sister Veyrath offers a more agile alternative, beginning with a Power Sword and Bolt Pistol. Her Fervent Slide supports both horizontal and vertical movement, while a Melta Bomb gives her a powerful option for clearing groups of enemies.
Players will be able to unlock additional weapons, including Flamers, Stakethrowers, and Shotguns. Some stages will also feature AI-controlled Death Korps of Krieg troops assisting both protagonists. The game's Doom-inspired identity receives another boost from composer Mick Gordon, who is creating the final boss theme for the battle against Vashtorr the Arkifane.

Expert View
Boltgun 2 signals a confident expansion of the formula that made the original stand out: preserve the immediacy of retro shooter combat while adding more replay value and character variety. The branching campaign, expanded enemy roster, tougher boss design, and contrasting arsenals could give the sequel stronger long-term appeal without moving it away from its focused single-player identity. The available demo also gives Warhammer fans an opportunity to judge that balance before launch.
