What changed for Black Ops Royale
Black Ops Royale launched on March 12, 2026, as part of Black Ops 7 Season 2. Inspired by Black Ops 4's Blackout, it deliberately moved away from Warzone's standard Battle Royale structure. Matches removed traditional loadouts, Buy Stations, the Gulag, and in-game cash, requiring players to build their setups from equipment found during a match.
Weapons progressed through rarity tiers, while Wingsuits, Grappling Hooks, and wall-jumping Omnimovement shaped movement across Avalon. That combination made the playlist feel closer to a traditional scavenging-based battle royale than the usual Warzone experience. Its run will last roughly seven months, making it one of the shorter-lived major experiments added to the game.
Who should play before the playlist leaves
Black Ops Royale is most relevant to players who prefer adapting to ground loot instead of relying on a prepared class. Because matches do not require fully customized weapons and perks, the mode can also be easier to enter for players who have not spent time leveling Black Ops 7 equipment.
The playlist has still divided the community. Some players value its accessible progression and distinct battle royale loop, while others argue that it split Warzone's audience across too many large-scale modes. Complaints have also focused on balance and the presence of bots in matchmaking, with some players reporting that human-heavy lobbies became more difficult to find. The mixed response means its removal is unlikely to satisfy everyone.
What Season 6 adds next
Season 6 provides two final Winstreak targets in Black Ops Royale. Ten consecutive wins unlock the Crimson Omen Weapon Camo, while a 25-win streak unlocks Contagion. Winstreak challenges will also cover Battle Royale and Resurgence, so players do not need to remain in one playlist to pursue the broader event objectives.
The update also brings back The Haunting on September 17. Haven's Hollow will become Haunted Hollow, with supernatural changes and a Ghost Train, and Warzone will receive a 64-player Giant Infected mode. Activision has not stated why Black Ops Royale is being retired, although its departure arrives as Warzone prepares to add Modern Warfare 4 content and progression with that game's first season.
