Players deciding on a launch character in World of Warcraft: Forever should take another look at their race choice. Blizzard’s final beta update has dramatically reduced the value of the Undead racial passive that previously helped make the race a standout option, while several competing races have received improvements ahead of the game’s November 4 release.
What changed for Undead players
The major adjustment targets Touch of the Grave, the Undead passive that had become one of the race’s biggest selling points during beta. Previously, it could trigger from most direct hits and drain 5% of an enemy’s health, restoring that amount to the Undead player. Its frequent activations made it valuable for both damage output and self-sustain.
The new version establishes separate activation rates: 20% for melee attacks and 30% for spells. However, Blizzard has attached a 25-second cooldown to the effect. That restriction greatly limits how often the health drain and heal can contribute during a fight, removing the repeated proc potential that helped Undead characters produce strong beta damage results.
Who is most affected by the balance pass
The change matters most to players who selected Undead for performance reasons, including those interested in the newly possible Undead Paladin combination. The race still has Cannibalize for recovering health and mana between fights or while leveling, but its other traits do not appear to offset the reduced impact of Touch of the Grave.
Will of the Forsaken has also been weakened in Forever, while Underwater Breathing remains useful only in limited situations. As a result, the race’s identity may still appeal to players, but its practical advantage looks much smaller than it did earlier in beta.
Race selection can carry extra weight for alternate characters because Forever’s Legacy System allows alts to gain talent points sooner. While racial bonuses represent only part of a character’s overall strength, early talent access can make small advantages feel more noticeable while progressing.
What to watch before and after launch
Undead were not the only focus of Blizzard’s latest changes. Several other races received improvements, widening the gap created by the Undead nerf. Humans gained broad critical-strike benefits and additional Spirit, while Dwarves and Tauren received boosts tied to critical effects and their respective utility abilities.
Troll health regeneration increased, Orcs gained a more general critical-strike increase alongside a Blood Fury reduction, and Skyborne elves now receive 3% Haste instead of 1%. Gnomes also received a substantial buff, positioning them among the strongest race choices described in the update.
Blizzard has indicated that more balance work is expected in the game’s opening weeks. That means launch-day rankings should not be treated as permanent, especially for players who value an Undead character’s theme more than a small numerical edge.
What players should know
- Touch of the Grave now has a 25-second cooldown, sharply reducing its combat frequency.
- The passive can activate at 20% on melee attacks and 30% on spells, but only when its cooldown is available.
- Undead Paladin remains playable, but the race is no longer the obvious performance pick it appeared to be during beta.
- Humans, Gnomes, Dwarves, Tauren, Trolls, Orcs and Skyborne elves all received changes that improve their relative appeal.
- Further launch-period balance passes could still alter the race hierarchy after November 4.
Expert View
This is a sensible correction if Touch of the Grave was consistently delivering outsized damage and healing, but the 25-second lockout appears severe compared with the buffs granted elsewhere. Players chasing efficiency should reassess race options before launch; players choosing Undead for class fantasy should not assume the current balance will remain unchanged for long.
