Achievement and Trophy systems have become a major part of how players measure progress, celebrate difficult completions, and compare their gaming history. PlayStation has long held a clear advantage with Platinum Trophies, which mark a game’s main list as fully completed. Xbox’s Gamerscore system has not offered an equivalent top-level milestone, but that long-standing difference is finally set to change.
Xbox Is Finally Building a Platinum-Style Milestone
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has confirmed that a Platinum-like achievement feature is already in development, with the company targeting a late 2026 release. The announcement addresses a request Xbox players have made for years: a clearer way to identify games they have completed in full instead of seeing every achievement blend into one overall Gamerscore total.
Important details remain unknown. Xbox has not revealed the feature’s final name, how it will be earned, or whether players will receive it retroactively for games they have already completed at 100%. Even so, the project appears to be more than an idea under discussion. Its development gives Xbox achievement hunters a dedicated completion milestone comparable to PlayStation’s most recognizable Trophy.
PlayStation Has More Than a Visual Lead to Protect
PlayStation has had Platinum Trophies across multiple generations, including PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and PS5. That head start has allowed Sony to experiment with the wider Trophy ecosystem. Trophy designs were updated for the PS5 era, and changes to Trophy levels created a longer path toward the maximum rank of 999.
Sony also connected Trophies to the now-discontinued PlayStation Stars rewards system, where certain collectibles and progression opportunities were tied to earning them. Those features helped make Trophy hunting feel like more than a private checklist. However, Xbox’s planned addition means PlayStation can no longer rely on the existence of Platinums alone as its clearest distinction.
Sony Could Turn Completion Hunting Into a Bigger Competition
The most direct response would be a new milestone beyond Platinum. One possible model would reward players who complete a game’s downloadable content after earning its main Platinum. DLC lists currently complicate the idea of a perfect completion because they can prevent a player’s overall percentage from reaching 100%, while offering no additional Platinum for the extra work.
Sony could also address multiplayer Trophies. Players can reach most of a game’s list only to find that the remaining tasks depend on modes with small communities, troubled servers, or services that have been shut down. A future policy could allow qualifying multiplayer Trophies to unlock automatically after a set date, protecting older games from becoming permanently impossible to complete.
Other improvements could include Trophy-hunting competitions linked to PlayStation Tournaments, profile displays for players’ favorite achievements, and reward points for collecting Trophies. These additions would give the system more social value and provide hunters with reasons to keep participating beyond a single completion.
Key points
- Xbox is developing a Platinum-style achievement milestone.
- The feature is targeted for late 2026.
- Its name, rules, and treatment of past completions are unknown.
- PlayStation could respond with new rewards, social tools, or completion tiers.
Expert View
This signals a shift from platform-specific identity toward direct competition over player engagement. Xbox is borrowing a feature that helped make PlayStation’s Trophy system distinctive, but Sony still has the opportunity to lead through smarter completion rules and stronger community tools. For achievement hunters, that rivalry could make long-term progression more meaningful on both platforms.
