Nintendo's Switch 2 is becoming the destination for another major revival, as Level-5 has confirmed a new Yo-Kai Watch project after years of limited activity for the franchise. Yo-Kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain will revisit one of the series' most important releases, bringing together the content associated with the three Nintendo 3DS versions while adding new material for modern hardware.
A Long-Awaited Return for Level-5's Monster-Raising RPG
The original Yo-Kai Watch launched in Japan on Nintendo 3DS in July 2013 and quickly developed into one of Level-5's biggest properties. By the end of 2015, shipments of the handheld games had exceeded 10 million units worldwide. The brand also expanded beyond games into anime, films, manga, and merchandise.
That momentum did not continue at the same pace. Yo-Kai Watch 4 arrived in 2019 and remains the latest mainline entry, although it was never released in the West. The most recent game before Haunted Domain was 2020's Yo-kai Watch Jam: Yo-kai Academy Y, a spin-off rather than a numbered sequel.
Haunted Domain Combines the Yo-Kai Watch 2 Versions
Level-5 announced Haunted Domain during the September 9 Nintendo Direct, confirming the game for Nintendo Switch 2. The project is based on the three versions of Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits, Fleshy Souls, and Psychic Specters.
The remake is planned to include additional story content and improved graphics, with Level-5 also teasing the arrival of new Yo-kai. The developer has not yet explained whether every version-exclusive feature from the original releases will be included in one package. It has also not provided a release date or launch window, so the game's position in the Switch 2 lineup remains unknown.
Why This Remake Matters to Older and Newer Players
Haunted Domain could make a historically important Yo-Kai Watch adventure easier to access. Nintendo discontinued purchases through the 3DS eShop in 2023, leaving physical editions as the main straightforward option for players who do not already own the games digitally. Yo-Kai Watch 2 and Yo-Kai Watch 3 have consequently become some of the rarest and most valuable 3DS games in 2026.
A modern release would also remove the need to rely on aging 3DS hardware or scarce physical copies. However, Level-5 has only confirmed the Switch 2 version so far. Although Yo-Kai Watch 4 appeared on Switch and PlayStation 4, the series has generally been associated with Nintendo systems, and there is no current indication of a non-Nintendo release for Haunted Domain.
