Players considering a return to Zenith: Nexus have a limited window left. Ramen VR has confirmed that the VR MMO's servers will close permanently on December 18, ending access across Steam and every other supported platform. Existing users can still play until shutdown, but there will be no offline alternative once the service ends.
What is changing for Zenith: Nexus?
Ramen VR announced on October 21 that Zenith: Nexus will go offline at 10:00 AM PST on Friday, December 18. The closure is permanent: after the servers are switched off, neither the free Zenith: Nexus experience nor its MMO content will be playable in any form.
The game began life in January 2022 as Zenith: The Last City, an anime-styled open-world VR MMO. In 2024, Ramen VR restructured the project under the Zenith: Nexus name. The revised release included two modes: Infinite Realms, a free-to-play session-based action RPG built around procedural cooperative runs, and The Last City, which remained the open-world MMO component available as paid DLC.
Who is affected by the shutdown?
The decision covers the full live service, not only the SteamVR edition. Players on Steam, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, Rift, and PlayStation VR2 will all lose access when the shared servers close. Zenith's PS5 version requires PS VR2 hardware and online connectivity, so it will also become unavailable after the cutoff.
Older hardware had already lost support. Access for Quest 1 and the original PlayStation VR version ended on November 6, 2024. For players on currently supported headsets, December 18 is the final date to log in, play with friends, and use remaining in-game currency.
Why is Ramen VR ending the service?
Ramen VR said running the servers was no longer financially sustainable. That is a difficult conclusion for a game that posted strong early results. In March 2022, the studio said Zenith had led Steam's overall sales chart, topped Oculus Rift and Quest rankings, and performed strongly on PlayStation VR. It also said the project had recovered its development costs and was profitable, helping the studio secure a $35 million Series B round shortly after launch.
The longer-term problem was retention. Ramen VR later said many people tried Zenith but most stopped playing after around a month, despite years of efforts to improve continued engagement. New content development ended in July 2024, while Season 4: Golden Isles arrived as the final major update the following month.
What players should know
- Zenith: Nexus servers are scheduled to close permanently at 10:00 AM PST on December 18.
- The shutdown applies across Steam, Meta Quest, Rift, and PlayStation VR2.
- Existing players can continue playing and spend remaining Zennies before the final closure.
- The free Zenith: Nexus client is expected to remain available to new players until November 18.
- Ramen VR said sales of The Last City DLC and Zennies were ended on October 21, though the DLC was still listed on Steam the following day.
Expert View
Zenith's closure is a reminder that a strong VR launch does not guarantee a sustainable MMO audience. The game earned meaningful early attention, but maintaining engagement and the cost of always-online infrastructure ultimately outweighed that momentum. Players who still value its social VR MMO world should treat the remaining service period as a final opportunity rather than expect a revival or replacement.
